This bill is reprehensible and does not get a thumbs up from myself or any one that can think for himself. It's basically redistribution of wealth once again being slid through congress as sneaky as possible. The usual approach we can count on from our elected officials. Is this what we pay these people for? If so it's money well waisted.

The ANC, South Africa's ruling party, is currently trying to ram through a national health insurance bill (http://standpointmag.co.uk/node/2061/full). The train wreck that will follow is predictable, but that's not stopping the ANC or other interested parties (e.g. South African communist party) from forcing the bill forward.

I faxed the article, together with a cover letter, to Webb, Warner, and all the Senate Finance Committee members except Bingaman and Stabenow (no fax).

My letter is reproduced below, in case it is of some use to someone.

We now have almost a century’s worth of data on the performance of national health insurance (NHI) systems. NHI systems have been called many names – single-payer, socialized health care, government health care – but their essence has been the same no matter where – Britain, the USSR, Cuba, to name a few – they had been implemented.

The data, which are publicly available, communicate bad news, in that:

· an NHI system rapidly becomes large and complex, ultimately unmanageable;
· over time, an NHI system ends up being staffed by professional ideologues, not professional medical personnel, especially at the highest decision-making levels;
· professional ideologues focus not on standards of care but on conformity;
· regulations that govern an NHI system rapidly become so complex and internally contradictory that the system functions arbitrarily and too often tyrannically;
· true health care professionals either remain at lower system levels where they are powerless to effect beneficial change, or they flee the system;
· compared to alternatives, the inefficiency of an NHI system increases dramatically;
· the cost of care in an NHI system goes up steeply;
· the timeliness and quality of care go down, especially for those most vulnerable.

As you know, former communist countries of Eastern Europe, which have first-hand experience with NHI systems, have dismantled them. The social democracies, which have long viewed NHI as sacred (Germany, for one), are chipping away at their systems. A few countries are struggling to establish NHIs (see attached), but the trend follows the data – after decades of experience, nations are backing away from centralized solutions.

It would be a tragedy if the United States went in the direction from which so many other nations are now so laboriously returning. I submit that, because of the evidence that speaks against NHI systems, all health care bills now under consideration in the Congress need a thorough, public airing. Please vote against any and all of these bills until such an open zero-based review has taken place to the satisfaction of the ordinary people – all Americans including your constituents – who must live with the consequences.
